Pub Day
Bird City has landed
This is a short post. Today is pub day for Bird City, the end of a process that began four years ago when I first started thinking about writing this book. Hardly a day has gone by since then where I haven’t thought about it. Thank you to everyone who has been a sounding board for ideas, who has ordered the book or told someone about it, or who plans on attending one of my events. Once you’ve read it I want to hear from you! This is the part I’ve been waiting for, to be able to talk about it.
Though I heard some bookstores in the city already had it out on shelves yesterday, a friend sent me this photo a week ago from the Barnes & Noble on the Upper West Side. I’m still in shock seeing the company it’s keeping on that table.
If you want a little sneak preview, you can check out this excerpt that Defector ran on Friday. LitHub also just published an essay I adapted from the book about why I prefer the beach in the fall and winter, when the human crowds leave and a new crowd arrives. I also enjoyed this review by
in his newsletter, The Green Dispatch.I’ll share more stories, interviews, and reviews in the coming weeks. I don’t spend much time on social media, but you can also get those updates on Bluesky.
I’ll be doing at least seven events over the next month, in Brooklyn, Manhattan, New Jersey, and Long Island. You can visit my website for the whole list. I’m working on Queens, too!
To those who signed up for my launch at the Montauk Club tomorrow night, if you arrive early at 6:30 there will be a tour of the historic building led by club member (and Brooklyn birder) Amy Cook. It’s well worth it.

Congratulations, Ryan!
